First thing’s first, let’s take a look at Mecca’s Angel’s first run of the season at Haydock last weekend.

OK, she lost but you couldn’t be disappointed with the way she ran. It was her first run since August on ground which would have been pretty sapping so she will come on a hell of a lot for it.

She was also carried across to the rail by the winner, Profitable, which wouldn’t have helped, yet kept on galloping and there was only a neck between us at the line.

She would run through a brick wall for you and you won’t find a more genuine horse.

And let’s not take anything away from the winner who is clearly an improving horse and coming of age. He deserves a lot of credit.

That said, he had enjoyed the benefit of a run this season and if we meet again in the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot I would be hopeful of turning the tables. I think we can get another Group One win this season.

I’m at Catterick for six rides today and very hopeful of starting off with a winner.

Peachey Carnehan just got touched off by a nose on his debut at Goodwood and Mark Johnston’s horses come on leaps and bounds for their first runs. He should take all the beating in the Scoop6 It's A Rollover Novice Median Auction Stakes.

Joseph Tuite is sending Zipedeedodah a long way from Lambourn so the hint should be taken in the Scoop6 Racing's Millionaire Maker Handicap. He ran a good race at Brighton last time and looks to be on a winning mark.

Ocean Sheridan would love the heavens to open ahead of the toteexacta Pick The 1st And 2nd Handicap.

He racked up a hat-trick on soft ground last summer and needs those conditions to be seen at his best. He wasn’t beaten far at Haydock a week ago, and was third at Catterick last year off a 1lb higher mark. He might be a nice price to get a place.

Hopefully you were on Awtaad last week, who I put up in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, and the big race of this weekend is the 188bet Sandy Lane Stakes, in which I fancy Buratino to bounce back to his best over this shorter trip of six furlongs.

He wasn’t seen at his best over the mile of the 2,000 Guineas but he was only beaten nine lengths and is a class act.

The big race of Bank Holiday is the Racing UK Zetland Gold Cup Handicap at Redcar – a race I have won twice before.

I am on Dark Red for Ed Dunlop, whose horses are in terrific form. This four-year-old has won his last three races, including the City and Suburban Stakes at Epsom.

He’s clearly very progressive and the track and ground should really suit. He should have as good a chance as any.

Whiteandgold is also worth keeping an eye on at Redcar next week. I sat on her on Friday morning at Bryan Smart’s and she seems in very good form.
