The Racing Post Trophy is the final Group 1 of the British Flat season and the race has been very kind to punters in recent years, with the favourite winning the juvenile contest for the last six years.

The unbeaten Foundation is 12/1 antepost favourite for the Derby and 5/6 with BetVictor to make it four out of four this season and make it a magnificent seven for favourite backers in the race. The John Gosden / Frankie Dettori combination have lit up the summer and it would be fitting if they ended the season in style, but there is rain forecast and Gosden is not convinced his charge would be suited by genuinely soft ground.

The each-way vote goes to Mengli Khan (3.45) who is a top price at 10/1 with BetVictor. Trained in Newmarket by Hugo Palmer, the colt made an eye-catching debut when third in a hot Newmarket maiden before easily landing the odds at Nottingham on soft ground earlier in the month.

You have to go back to 2006 for the last double-figure price winner of the race when Peter Chapple-Hyam saddled subsequent Derby winner Authorized to land the prize at 25/1. He has Marcel (50/1) in this afternoon’s line-up and he and Tony Curtis (10/1) are other runners at a big price to consider in a cracking end to the season.

Dettori rides Dhahmaan (2.00) in the opening listed contest and the form of the selection’s second at York last time has been franked by the winners’ subsequent Group 2 success in France. A repeat of that effort would make him hard to beat with further rain unlikely to be a concern.

Newbury have their last Flat card of the season and I hope Start Time (1.50) can make a successful transition from a Windsor nursery to Group class performer in the Horris Hill Stakes. The Godolphin runner has already been gelded and could be called the winner from some way out on soft ground last time over a mile. The drop back in trip is a slight concern but it is sure to be a thorough test of stamina.

Zonderland is out of a Pivotal mare and should go in the ground and he and the once-raced Crazy Horse are big dangers in an excellent contest.

Her Majesty the Queen has two chances of listed success in the Radley Stakes and the vote goes to her Light Music (3.35) who easily landed the odds at Leicester earlier in the month having shaped with such promise on debut behind Fillies’ Mile runner up Nathra.

There’s a great card at Cheltenham and Philip Hobbs has saddled the winner of the 3m Handicap Chase for the last four years, including with Roalco De Farges (3.20) last year and the grey is only 4lbs higher this afternoon. The selection clearly goes well fresh and a tissue price of 12/1 would be worth an each way interest.

Nigel Twiston-Davies saddles Mont Choisy (3.55) only ten days after his Warwick handicap success when he suggested a return to today’s three-mile trip would see him in an even better light. The selection hasn’t been out of the first two since joining the yard in June and can make it four wins from six.

There is rain forecast at Kelso and the hope is that Blakemount (2.30) can make up for lost time having been off the track since finishing runner up at Wetherby on his chase debut last November. The selection is still only a seven-year-old and this three-mile Irish point winner remains a horse of huge potential as a staying chaser.

Aintree’s first card of the season is tomorrow and, in the opener, Knockgraffon (1.25) is taken to put behind a moderate effort on his British debut for Dan Skelton in the spring.

Going For Broke was backed off the boards at Newton Abbot earlier in the month but disappointed and a bigger danger may be the Harry Fry trained American who won his only point-to-point in Ireland albeit in the Stewards’ Room having finished second past the post.

Danimix (2.30) is 10lbs higher than when scoring at Chepstow last time but can land the hat-trick in the Veterans’ Handicap Chase for Peter Bowen who does so well at Aintree. He is lightly raced for one of his years, is in the form of his life and has most to feat from Ely Brown making his seasonal reappearance for Charlie Longsdon.

Work In Progress (3.00) carries a 6lbs penalty for his facile Kempton success last weekend but is taken to follow up for the Skeltons. Hunters Hoof is unbeaten in two starts over timber for Nicky Henderson and remains potentially well treated, but Work In Progress is best followed until meeting with defeat.

In the feature Old Roan Chase, Duke Of Navan (3.30) can make a winning reappearance for Nicky Richards; the selection steps up in trip to 2m 4f for the first time but should appreciate the extra half-mile and gets the vote in a race where there are plenty of potential front-runners.
