SEPTEMBER has continued much in the same vein as August, which was a month I’ll never forget.

I enjoyed my first Group One success on board Mecca’s Angel, rode 12 winners at 11 tracks, and then picked up the Stobart Jockey of the Month award last week.

I had tough opposition to see off with Frankie Dettori, Silvestre De Sousa and Sammy Jo Bell also nominated.

I was awarded a £2,000 cash prize along with £500 for charity which I am splitting between the Leger Legends Charity Race at Doncaster and my daughter’s primary school in Boroughbridge. It’s only right that I take the opportunity to thank my agent Richard Hale and all the owners and trainers who have supported me.

As I said, this month has also been kind to me so far, having ridden four winners in five days.

Horses for the notebook

I rode Scrutinise to win for Thurloe Thoroughbreds at Thirsk on Saturday, and he looks a nice prospect for the owners and Ed Dunlop. I’d urge you to make a note of him.

Thurloe then put me on Thunder Pass at Carlisle on Wednesday – which was also only my second ride for Hughie Morrison – and he showed great determination to hold on by a nose. He’s another with a really likeable attitude.

I HAVE six rides at Musselburgh today, with Chadic carrying my hopes in the feature race, the Caledonian Cup Handicap.

I have ridden eight winners for Mark Johnston this season, at a strike-rate of around 25 per cent, and Chadic was one of them at Newcastle in June. He then won at Chester before finishing down the field in handicaps. I think the track will really suit and could be a tasty price.

Another horse, who could easily belie her odds is Mecca’s Missus, who runs in the nursery.

As the name suggests, she is owned by David Metcalfe, whose colours are also carried by Mecca’s Angel. David doesn’t have a big string of horses, but the ones he has owned have been very successful. I’ve always said I’d far rather ride for lucky people than any other kind.

Mecca’s Missus has the potential to be another success story. If she can reproduce on the track what she’s shown us at home, then she’ll win this. She hasn’t quite fulfilled her potential though and we’re hoping the first-time blinkers will do the job.

I also ride Color Model in the nursery for my boss Michael Dods. She has shown patches of ability and will appreciate this step up to seven furlongs on her handicap bow.

Alistair Whillans is a trainer I have a good record for and I am three from 10 for him this season. I ride Hidden Rebel for him in the fillies’ handicap. She looks in cracking form going into this and has as good a chance as any. We also team up for Opt Out, who loves it at Musselburgh, having won there three times.

LOOKING at the two big races of the day, I think Golden Horn will win the Qipco Irish Champion Stakes. He wasn’t quite himself at York. He got a bump from his pacemaker, which set him off and he ran with his choke out, so you can forgive him that run.

Over at Doncaster, I fancy local trainer David Brown to have some joy with Medrano in the Ladbrokes St Leger. I am not saying he’s going to win, but I think if there’s a fair bit of rain, then he can run into a place at a big price at 40-1. He’ll relish the trip too.

MOVIESTA got back to winning ways over six furlongs at The Curragh last time after a season when things hadn't gone totally his way. He is back at the track for the Flying Five and Eddie has told me he couldn't be happier with him. He is just as effective over five furlongs, and we're expecting a big run.
