TORCHLIGHTER followed up a recent win at Windsor in impressive fashion in the boylesports.com Dowlnload Our App Handicap at Newmarket.

His career appeared to be going nowhere at seven furlongs earlier in the season but he was second over nine furlongs at Sandown and won last time out over a mile and a quarter.

Mark Johnston won this race with Maputo last year and while there did not appear as much strength in depth to this renewal, he had some decent performers a long way behind.

It was a double on the day for Joe Fanning and Johnston, who had earlier taken the Bahrain Trophy with St Leger-bound Hartnell.

The 13-2 chance took over two furlongs out and never looked like being caught, pulling five lengths clear of Ventura Quest.

Fanning said: “They went a nice gallop in front and it suited him down to the ground, he’s won well.

“The step up in trip suited him well as he showed in his last run at Windsor where he won quite nice last time.

“He’s taking his racing very well.”

Johnston could not hide his delight at another winner.

“We’re singing in the rain,”

he said. “I was worried about the ground but my wife (Deirdre) had walked it and she assured me it would be fine.

“Joe’s a very good judge of pace, and that’s what won it. I hadn’t really thought further than this race.”

East Coast Lady (12-1) provided a victory for common sense in the Peter Silvester Memorial EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes.

Drawn near the far rail, Freddie Tylicki made a beeline for that part of the track and she never saw another rival.

Most of the other jockeys raced down the centre, apart from Ryan Moore who aimed for the other rail and he chased home the impressive winner on Richard Fahey’s filly Lacing, albeit beaten three and a half lengths.

The 50-1 chance Jillanar was third.

East Coast Lady is a rare juvenile in training with William Stone at his West Wickham yard and she had been a fine third behind John Gosden’s Exceedingly, but she was back in the ruck in the middle of the track this time.

Stone said: “We’ve had plenty of placed horses here but it’s lovely to have a winner.

I’ve always liked this filly but I was worried about the soft ground. The way she has done that on her own today has really impressed me.

“She’s had two quick races so I’d imagine she’ll have a bit of a break now.”

Ryan Moore was seen at his best as he drove Aidan O’Brien’s Table Rock to win the Hastings Direct Sir Henry Cecil Stakes right on the line from Pretzel.

Pretzel, having his first run for John Gosden since being switched from Roger Varian, appeared to have arrived at the head of affairs with a winning run well over a furlong out under William Buick.

The 2-1 favourite firstly fended off Zarwaan, then Parbold folded but Table Rock, now the winner of four of his last five starts, arrived latest of all.

As they flashed past the post together it appeared Pretzel had held on but Table Rock quickly got the verdict by a nose at 4-1.
