Golf
Fisher finds his form
FORMER club pro Ross Fisher
continued his emergence as a
world-class player with an impressive
opening round at the
CA Championship.
Fisher, playing his first
World Golf Championships
event, posted a four-under-par
68 in a testing breeze at the
Doral Resort's Blue Monster.
He and Luke Donald headed
the British challenge, three
strokes behind leaders Miguel
Angel Jimenez and Geoff
Ogilvy with some players, including
Tiger Woods, still on
the course.
Hartlepool's Graeme Storm
finished six shots off the pace
after a one under par 71.
Fisher, 27, worked at Wentworth
in Surrey only a few
years ago, but those days are
behind him now that he has established
himself on the European
Tour, winning last year's
KLM Open.
Justin Rose, meanwhile,
failed to build on a strong
start. Four birdies in ten holes
sent the European Order of
Merit champion flying up the
leaderboard, but he stumbled
with a couple of quick bogeys,
followed by some squandered
opportunities down the stretch.
In the end, Rose was far from
satisfied with his two-underpar
70, although he was more
pleased with his attitude.
(I feel a) little hard done
by,'' said last year's European
Order of Merit winner.
I played well coming in, hit
some great putts on 16, 17 and
18 that all defied gravity.
I played well, stayed patient,
my attitude was great, I
played the best I've played all
year. I felt it could have been or
should have been a few better
but at least inside I feel good
about the round.
Mentally, today was the
biggest improvement. I felt a
lot more calm out on the
course, a lot more patient.''
Fellow Englishman Nick
Dougherty also shot 70.
My two under doesn't look
too special but all in all I'm
pleased with that,'' he said.
The double (bogey) on four
was annoying, because we had
to wait on that tee for about 20
minutes. I made an error, so
I'm not blaming that, but it
didn't help.''
Ogilvy, the 2006 US Open
champion, continued his recent
improved form to reel off seven
birdies in an impressive sevenunder
65 in a testing northerly
breeze.
