Storm defies illness
GRAEME STORM fought off a
mystery illness to claim his
highest finish of the season on
the European Tour.
The Hartlepool golfer was always
in contention at the Johnnie
Walker Classic but, after a
failure to finish with a flourish,
he had to settle for a share of
fifth place.
He earned his biggest cheque
of the campaign, around
£45,000, but he will be a little
frustrated to have ended four
shots shy of New Zealand winner
Mark Brown.
After two weekend rounds of
69 in New Delhi, Storm will take
heart from an impressive 14
under par total to claim a first
top ten finish of 2008.
There was a stage yesterday
when he looked capable of winning
his second Tour title. Instead,
a double bogey at the seventh
proved costly.
The 29-year-old also made a
mess of a birdie opportunity at
the last, when he fired his tee
shot into the rough and had to
settle for a par on the relatively
short par five.
But given that this was a
marked improvement from
Storm's previous high this season
- 62nd place in the Dubai
Desert Classic a month ago - he
will be filled with confidence
ahead of this week's outing in
the Maybank Malaysian Open.
After falling ill ahead of his
third round, Storm admitted: "I
don't know how I got round
there on Saturday. It was so hot
and I hardly got any sleep.
"I felt so bad I didn't think I
was going to play, but I got something
off the physios and that
seemed to help a little bit.
"I don't know whether it's the
food or a bug that's going around
because everyone seems to be
getting a dose of it.
"Sometimes these things can
help a little. You're just trying to
concentrate and stay calm and
focused and not let it get you
down too much. So you just freewheel
around."
Malton and Norton's Simon
Dyson finished eight shots further
back in tied 34th place,
boosting his season's earnings
by around £5,000.
