SUNDERLAND have made their first signing of the summer, with Sebastian Coates joining from Liverpool.

Coates spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light, and went on to be a regular in the side as Dick Advocaat led the Black Cats to safety.

The centre-half has put pen to paper on a four-year deal and joins for a fee believed to be in the region of £4million.

He returns to Wearside next week having taken part in the Copa America, representing Uruguay.

Black Cats sporting director Lee Congerton said: “Sebastian was an important part of the team under Dick last season and we are delighted that he has joined us on a permanent basis.

“He has Premier League experience, which is important and, after spending last season on loan with us, he will be able to settle into the team very quickly.”
