SUNDERLAND youngster Duncan Watmore is hoping to round off a successful season in style as he attempts to fire England Under-20s to glory at the Toulon Tournament.

Watmore was named Barclays Under-21 Player of the Year last week after scoring 11 goals in 18 games for Sunderland's development team.

That form earned him a call-up to Aidy Boothroyd's England Under-20 squad, which is currently competing in the prestigious Toulon Tournament.

Watmore scored as England claimed a 3-3 draw with Morocco in their opening game of the competition, and was influential again as they beat Ivory Coast 2-1 yesterday. As a result, the Under-20s head into Wednesday’s final group game with Mexico in a confident mood.

“It’s been a surreal experience for me,” said Watmore. “It’s a privilege to play for my country and is the biggest thing of all. To make my debut against Morocco but also to get on the score-sheet was a fantastic experience.

“Getting that accolade for the season is always a nice thing, it’s great to get awards and it just shows the work that you’ve put in and the team have been fantastic with me all year.

“Confidence is a big thing I’m playing the best football of my life and I feel great and couldn’t ask for more. Everyone here with England has treated me so well, the players and the coaches have been terrific and I couldn’t have asked for more.

"I’ve been fortunate with the teams I’ve played with this year and I’ve done well off the back of it so I’m very happy with that.

“The plan is to get to the final of the tournament, hopefully we can win the next two games, keep working hard and if we get to the final that will be awesome.

"I want to play as much as possible, train well and see what team the manager picks, every one of the lads have been class and have all worked well as a team and we need to keep that going and reach the final.”
