SUNDERLAND say Adam Johnson will remain available for selection after the midfielder was yesterday charged with three counts of sexual activity with a girl under 16.
A statement released by the club this morning said: “Following yesterday’s statement from Durham Constabulary, the club recognises that the formal legal process must take its course and whilst our position remains unchanged, we will keep the matter under review.
“The club will not be making any further comment.”
The Professional Footballers' Association released this statement earlier today: "Given that this is an ongoing legal matter it would not be appropriate to comment specifically on the case, however we would emphasise that just like any other individual, Adam is entitled to a fair hearing. We are not in a position to make any further comment."
Johnson is due to appear at Peterlee Magistrates Court on Wednesday, May 20 - the day Sunderland are due to play at Arsenal in what could be a crucial match in their battle for Premier League survival.
Johnson was initially arrested on Monday, March 2 and was charged after he answered his police bail yesterday at Peterlee police station.
He was initially suspended from playing, but was later reinstated by the club.
Twitter reaction to Sunderland statement
Not suspending Adam Johnson suggests that Sunderland are very concerned about the threat of relegation. Not a good reflection on the club.

Sunderland are right to not suspend Adam Johnson. People seem to forget that you're innocent until proven guilty
