GUS Poyet has bemoaned a lack of cutting edge in front of goal after Sunderland recorded their tenth draw of the season against West Ham United.

The Black Cats took a 22nd minute lead at the Stadium of Light when Jordi Gomez converted his penalty following a James Tomkins foul on Adam Johnson.

However, less than eight minutes later Poyet’s men surrendered their lead when they failed to close down Stewart Downing, whose deflected shot sailed past Costel Pantilimon from 22 yards.

Both teams had chances to claim three points, but it was Sunderland who were most guilty of failing to convert theirs.

Right at the death Connor Wickham was denied by a spectacular Adrian save, but the miss of the match came on the stroke of half time when Jozy Altidore failed to make a good connection with Seb Larsson cross with only an open goal to hit.

The result means the Black Cats have drawn five of their last six, and although they are better off than this stage last season, Poyet admitted he is feeling frustrated by his side’s lack of progress.

“I want more and I want to win, but this is where Sunderland Football Club is at the moment,” the head coach said.

“We had 14 or 15 shots and hit the target two or three times. I’m a little bit frustrated. It was something I was not expecting to have this year.

“I want to improve and want to get better. I don’t want to be in this position every week. I’m frustrated because we should be in a better position, but I repeat, this is what we are.”
