GUSTAVO POYET will not discuss a new contract at the Stadium of Light until Sunderland's Premier League fate is decided.

Poyet signed a two-year deal when he replaced Paolo Di Canio last October, and the subsequent four months have seen him guide his side off the foot of the Premier League table and take them to the final of the Capital One Cup.

Sunderland owner Ellis Short has come under increased pressure to tie the Uruguayan down to a longer-term deal, but there have been no formal discussions between the Sunderland owner and Poyet or his representatives.

While there is no suggestion of Poyet looking to leave Wearside, the current situation leads to a degree of uncertainty that could be avoided if talks were to take place.

However, the Black Cats boss insists that he will not enter into discussions until this season's main objective is achieved and Premier League safety is guaranteed.

“I won't be talking about that (his contractual position) because we have done nothing yet,” said Poyet. “My challenge is to get safe, and we are not.

“I'm not thinking about the future, and not even thinking about pre-season yet. Normally, in February, I would be. I would be planning pre-season, but I don't think it's right yet, and it will take a little bit longer for things like that to fall into place.”
