DARRON GIBSON will make his first Sunderland start when the Black Cats entertain Southampton this afternoon.

The midfielder joined from Everton in the final days of the transfer window, and was a substitute as Sunderland thrashed Crystal Palace 4-0 last weekend.

However, he has been promoted to today's starting line-up at the Stadium of Light, with Jack Rodwell unavailable because of a hamstring injury.

The change is David Moyes' only alteration to the side that won at Selhurst Park, with Sunderland once again set to line up with a five-man backline.

Jermain Defoe continues as a lone striker, with Adnan Januzaj playing behind the former England international.

SUNDERLAND (5-3-1-1): Mannone; Jones, Denayer, Kone, O'Shea, Oviedo; Larsson, Gibson, Ndong; Januzaj; Defoe.

Subs: Mika (gk), Manquillo, Lescott, Honeyman, Pienaar, Khazri, Borini.

SOUTHAMPTON (4-2-3-1): Forster; Cedric, Stephens, Yoshida, Bertrand; Romeu, Davis; Ward-Prowse, Tadic, Redmond; Gabbiadini.
