Sunderland 2 Wigan 0
IT might not have gone down very well in Dubai or Bangkok, but you won't find too many Sunderland supporters complaining about the quality of this afternoon's 2-0 win over Wigan.
While the standard of the football on offer rarely rose above the mundane, the three points that went the Black Cats' way could well prove crucial at the end of the season.
With the pressure at its most intense, Sunderland have now won their last four home games. It is a run that has lifted them clear of the relegation zone, and created something of an air of invincibility at the Stadium of Light.
Today's victory was probably the least convicing of the four, with Wigan hitting the woodwork twice in the second half, and Craig Gordon making at least three impressive saves as the visitors piled on the pressure in the latter stages.
Both Jonny Evans and Nyron Nosworthy were forced into a series of crucial interventions, but the Black Cats deserved their victory because they made the most of the chances that came their way.
Dickson Etuhu exploited some dreadful marking to open the scoring, and Daryl Murphy added a sensational second with a rasping 25-yard drive that arrowed into the top left-hand corner of the net.
It was a good enough to goal to win any game, and if Sunderland were to start producing similar strikes on their travels, the last three months of the season could yet be an anxiety-free zone.
