Sunderland 1 Aston Villa 1

WHEN Dwight Yorke swapped the beaches of Sydney for the Seaburn sea front it probably wasn't for the chance again to play on a freezing December day in England.

The opportunity to ply his trade in the Premier League would not have been at the forefront of his mind either - 16 months ago Roy Keane's side were languishing near the bottom of Division One.

When Sunderland were promoted following an excellent run which began at the start of this year he may well have asked himself if he could still cut it in the English top flight.

His performance on Saturday confirmed he is undoubtedly the club's best midfielder. Nothing too extravagant or complex just simply getting the ball and ensuring the vast majority of his passes reached their intended destination.

His colleagues - Dickson Etuhu especially - should take note.

The 36-year-old doesn't have the legs to play every week but Sunderland look a far better side when he does start.

They may have rode what luck was going around the Stadium of Light but with Yorke performing like he did on Saturday they at least look like they can compete with the likes of Villa even if the Manchester United's and Chelsea's are currently beyond them.
