Sunderland 1 Fulham 1

AT £6m Kenwyne Jones had many Sunderland fans scratching their heads at the wisdom of manager Roy Keane's purchase.

The Black Cats boss was determined to land the Trinidad and Tobago international striker and was prepared to apparently pay over the odds. Seven games and four goals later the former Southampton man could prove to be Keane's most important Premier League acquisition.

Two of his goals have secured three points - wins against Reading and Saturday's home draw with Fulham - and there appear few defences that can handle the 23-year-old.

But Lawrie Sanchez's side appeared to have the better of him until the 70th minute when, with his first meaningful contribution, he flicked the ball over the defence for Grant Leadbitter.

The midfielder was clean in on goal and he should have done better than fire straight at Antti Niemi.

That appeared to be the end of Sunderland's chance of salvaging something from the game but Jones had other ideas.

A great ball in from the left from Leadbitter - returning the favour - allowed Jones to get ahead of his marker and direct a ten yard header beyond Niemi.

Anthony Stokes spurned a great chance to win in injury time, but Jones was again the hero.

The only danger is that Sunderland may become too reliant on their leader of the line who was only passed fit to play on the morning of the game.
