SUNDERLAND (4-1-4-1):

7 Camp: Made some decent saves as Norwich carved out a succession of chances and has looked much better in recent games

6 Love: Tried to get forward when possible, but struggled defensively against the lively and dangerous Murphy

5 Kone: Found himself out of position on a number of occasions and was undone by Oliveira’s movement

4 O’Shea: Couldn’t deal with the pace and mobility of the Norwich attack and went off with what looked like another injury

4 Matthews: Recalled ahead of Oviedo, but was hauled off at half-time after struggling in the first half

5 Cattermole: Tried manfully to hold things together at the heart of midfield, but his lack of pace was an issue

7 Gooch: Another lively attacking display from a player who is likely to be a key part of Sunderland’s rebuilding job in League One

5 Ejaria: Wasted a golden opportunity after he went clean through in the first half – his loan spell hasn’t been a success

8 HONEYMAN: Deserved his goal as he made a series of bursts into the area – one of Sunderland’s few bright spots this season

7 McGeady: Failed to convert from the penalty spot, but set up Honeyman’s goal and fired in a succession of dangerous strikes

6 Fletcher: Won the penalty as he was brought down by Hanley and held the ball up well despite some physical opposition

Subs:

5 Oviedo (for Matthews, 46): Gave Sunderland more of an attacking threat after coming onto the field, but was far from watertight at the back

4 Clarke-Salter (for O’Shea, 70): Wasn’t able to close down Norwich’s attacker after coming on in the second half

LuaLua (for Gooch, 90)

(not used): Steele (gk), E Robson, McManaman, Asoro.

NORWICH (4-2-3-1):

Gunn 7; Pinto 6, Zimmerman 4 (Srbeny 77), Hanley 5, Husband 4 (Lewis 46, 5); Reed 5, Vrancic 7; Murphy 8, MADDISON 8, Hoolahan 6 (Klose 46, 6); Oliveira 8.

Subs (not used): McGovern (gk), Leitner, Raggett, Tettey.

Man Of The Match: JAMES MADDISON – Missed an excellent chance as he fired against the post, but ran the game from the heart of midfield. It is easy to see why Premier League clubs are interested in him.
