SUNDERLAND (4-4-1-1):
4 Steele: Allowed a first-half shot to slip through his hands and conceded five, but made a decent save from Adeyemi
5 Jones: Scored with a well-taken header, but struggled defensively as Ipswich caused a succession of problems from the flanks
2 Kone: Started dreadfully as he allowed Waghorn to beat him for the opener, and got even worse from that point onwards
3 Wilson: Suffered an awful night, although an injury at the start of the second half at least put him out of his misery
3 Matthews: Played as an orthodox left-back, but found himself repeatedly ripped apart as Ipswich ran riot
5 McManaman: Produced an occasional flash of ability, but his best chance came to nothing as Bialkoswki saved with his legs
5 Cattermole: Was overrun in midfield, but almost claimed a second-half equaliser with a header that was tipped over
3 Gibson: Utterly anonymous from first minute to last, and conceded possession cheaply for Ipswich’s final goal
4 Oviedo: His error led to Ipswich’s third goal, and he looked like a fish out of water on the left of midfield
6 McGEADY: Produced Sunderland’s best moment of the night as he curled home a superb 20-yard strike
4 Vaughan: His limitations were obvious again as he struggled to hold on possession and was out-jumped for Spence’s header
Subs:
3 O’Shea (for Wilson, 50): His arrival did nothing to improve things as his lack of pace and mobility was exposed
4 Gooch (for Oviedo, 56): By the time he came on to the field, the game was already as good as up
Honeyman (for McManaman, 66): Tried to add some energy after his introduction, but it was too little too late 4
(not used): Ruiter (gk), Browning, Ndong, Asoro.
Man Of The Match: MARTYN WAGHORN – The North-Easterner claimed a goal and three assists on a memorable night against his former club.
