SUNDERLAND manager Simon Grayson has been speaking ahead of Thursday's game in the Carabao Cup against Bury.

On injuries

“Everybody who was involved is fine, they have come through and will be fine. (Bryan) Oviedo has trained this morning so it will be nice to have him back.

"He is more likely to train all week and there is an Under-23s game on Friday, he could be more involved in that. (Duncan) Watmore and (Paddy) McNair making good progress. (Jack) Rodwell has been training last three or four days. Those are the only ones who are out, (Josh) Maja as well with a knee injury.”

On Jeremain Lens joining Besiktas?

“It’s part and parcel of being a manager and working out what is best for the football club.

"While any player is contracted at a club you have to treat them correctly, and when an opportunity comes to leave we can’t be accused of not looking after them.

"We knew it would happen, we still think one or two more could go, but while we have them we will keep working with them."

Are wantaway players disruptive?

“They are only disruptive if they are not towing the line and doing what they are asked to like everyone else. If Jeremain, or anyone else who wanted to leave, weren’t doing what the others were then I would come down like a ton of bricks.

"I would make sure they were. Ultimately if the club wanted we could hold them to their contracts, I have known it happen where players rot in reserves for a couple of years.”

On the Carabao Cup

“The youngsters could play a big part through course of the season, if they are good enough they are old enough they will get a chance.

"In pre-season, (Josh) Maja and (Joel) Asoro did well, (Elliot) Embleton, (Lynden) Gooch, too, and the others, some may play on Thursday night.

"They have quality. We have plenty of belief in these players and if they play on Thursday then they have to show what they are capable of doing.”
