DAVID MOYES thinks Sunderland’s players must go to Arsenal and show they can still turn in a positive performance despite relegation – even if he is set to be without more players because of injury.

The Black Cats boss has revealed there are more players “complaining” of problems ahead of the trip to the Emirates, which comes just days after Victor Anichebe and Jason Denayer were forced off with respective hamstring and thigh complaints.

Moyes is weighing up whether to take more Under-23s players down to London when they travel after training ahead of tomorrow night’s game with the Gunners, even though many are due to face Porto in the Premier League International Cup final on Wednesday.

“I have not had chance to see them this morning, the two boys came off injured and weren’t involved yesterday in training,” said Moyes, who didn’t want to reveal who else was struggling.

“I don’t think George Honeyman will be fit either. Another couple are complaining about different things, so we will see how they are.”

He added: “I’m more concerned that I’ve now got others who are saying they’re injured as well but we will go there and be committed.”

Sunderland were beaten 2-0 by Swansea City on Saturday and the manner of the display frustrated the manager, while supporters turned on him and called for him to go.

Moyes, whose side finish the season with a trip to champions Chelsea on Sunday, said: “I was massively disappointed with Saturday’s performance, because of the performance at Hull, it was our last home game and I just felt that on reflection our performance was really, really poor. I didn’t enjoy it. I have not enjoyed the feelings since the game, probably as much as any game.

“We have to improve and we go to Arsenal and be determined, the players have to show they can play at this level, for most of this season we have not been able to show that, this is a chance to show they can play on the stages like the Emirates and Stamford Bridge.

“In my mind I was kind of hoping if we could get to one of those games need one of those two to stay up, I had a picture of it but it didn’t get that far.”

Moyes admitted he always knew the challenge of keeping Sunderland up this year would be difficult.

He said: “It has been a horrible season because of the outcome, we have said we are really disappointed by it. It’s not been great. We have made everyone well aware our squad was short from the start, we would also have liked to have added in January.

“We knew, we were experienced enough to realise, what it would take to stay up and at the start we were always playing catch up.

“You always look back, and the first thing I would always do is look at myself. There are some things along the journey where maybe I shouldn’t have done that or I could have done this, but ultimately that’s not why we are in the position we are in.”
