Entertainment: ****
BOURNEMOUTH (4-2-3-1): BORUC 7; A Smith 5, Francis 6, Cook 7, Daniels 6; Gosling 7, Arter 6 (Mousset 76); Stanislas 6 (Fraser 82), Wilshere 8, Ibe 5 (Afobe 46, 5); King 6. Subs (not used): Federici, Ake, Pugh, Mings.
SUNDERLAND (4-4-2):
9 Pickford: Showed why he is one of the most highly-rated young keepers in the Premier League with a series of fine saves including a stunning late effort to deny Josh King.
7 Jones: Determined, committed performance from the right-back who helped set the tone for his side’s battling display
6 Djilobodji: Looked very shaky during the first half but improved in the second period and produced a fine challenge to prevent Jack Wilshere putting Bournemouth ahead.
6 Kone: Appeared set for a torrid afternoon when he almost gifted the home side a first half goal but grew in confidence as the game wore on.
7 Van Aanholt: Handed the tough task of keeping Roger Stanislas quiet but eventually snuffed out the threat of the Bournemouth winger;
8 Watmore: Tireless, positive running gave Sunderland an outlet when they were under the cosh. Unlucky to stray offside before finding the net.
4 Pienaar: Undid all his good work of the previous 59 minutes with a foolish challenge under the referee’s nose to earn a red card. Can thank his team-mates for bailing him out.
6 Ndong: Took more responsibility after Pienaar was sent off. Drew an excellent save from Artur Boruc with a rising drive shortly after half-time
6 McNair: Not a natural on the left-hand side of midfield but stuck to his task, offering van Aanholt much-needed protection;
9 ANICHEBE: Looked unplayable at times as he used his power, strength and skill to give the Bournemouth backline an afternoon to forget
8 Defoe: Showed both side of his game with the clever pass into Anichebe for the opener before showing nerves of steel from the penalty spot.
Subs
Denayer (for McNair 72): Helped strengthen the core of the team after Pienaar was dismissed, offering protection in front of the back-four. 7
Love (for Watmore 90+1): Little chance to make an impact during the tense final moments. 6
Gooch (for Defoe 90+4): Appeared for the final seconds and Moyes’ men ran down the clock. 6
(not used): Mika (gk), Khazri, Januzaj, Manquillo.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Victor Anichebe - a goal, an assist and even a post-match tweet that made fun of himself for his social media gaffe after the West Ham defeat. Not a bad afternoon’s work.
