A LAST-GASP Winston Reid winner left Sunderland deflated and disappointed on their first visit to the London Stadium.

The Black Cats had worked hard to keep the Hammers at bay and it had looked as if they would secure a first clean sheet of the season.

But then Reid, the big defender, found himself in space on the edge of the box when a corner looked like it would come to nothing, and he drilled an effort into the bottom left corner of Jordan Pickford’s net.

Sunderland had a few chances of their own but it never looked like they would end a wait for a first Premier League win of the campaign that has been extended to nine matches. David Moyes’ side are now five points shy of safety.

In a bid to come up with a way of finally winning, Moyes made two changes to the team that lost at Stoke City a week earlier. Steven Pienaar, asked to play furthest forward of the centre midfielders, and Lamine Kone were the men back in the side.

And they had a tough start when West Ham took control of possession and created a number of openings, while Jermain Defoe struggled to get a touch at the other end.

Dimitri Payet had a few decent efforts on goal, including hitting the post in the first half and forcing a save from Pickford when it seemed the home team would open the scoring.

But West Ham, who also saw Simone Zaza’s overhead kick drop wide of the upright in injury-time, did not maintain that momentum for the whole half and Sunderland may have taken the lead themselves.

Jack Rodwell had a header from close range go over from Wahbi Khazri’s free-kick, while Defoe rolled a team effort into the hands of keeper Adrian. To be goalless at the break, though was a positive for Sunderland.

And immediately after the restart Khazri had the best chance of the game. An attempted pass deflected kindly into his path but with just the keeper to beat his effort was easily turned away by Adrian.

Sunderland had grown in confidence and made life a lot more difficult for West Ham but then the final ten quarter of an hour was about trying to keep West Ham at bay.

And just when it seemed like they would, Reid turned his man on the edge of the area and drilled an effort through a crowded box to seal the three points.
