TOTTENHAM (4-2-3-1):
Lloris 6; Walker 7, Alderweireld 7, Dier 7 (Davies 77), Vertonghen 6; Dembele 7 (Lamela 74), Wanyama 6; Sissoko 6, Alli 6, SON 8; Kane 6 (Janssen 87).
Subs (not used): Vorm (gk), Trippier, Winks, Eriksen.
SUNDERLAND (4-3-3):
8 PICKFORD: Made a string of impressive saves and was Sunderland’s best player at Spurs for the second season in a row
4 Denayer: Was never comfortable against the lively Son and would surely have preferred to make his first league start as a centre-half
5 Kone: Didn’t shirk a challenge, but wasn’t his usual composed self and lost his marker on a number of occasions
4 Djilobodji: Is suffering a painful start to his Sunderland career, with a basic mistake once again proving extremely costly
6 Manquillo: Was involved in a late reshuffle that saw him moved to left-back, but fared fairly well against Sissoko
7 Ndong: Didn’t enjoy a winning debut, but still made an eye-catching one – athletic and disciplined at the heart of midfield
6 Kirchhoff: Remains an extremely important member of this team and did his best to close down the Spurs midfield
7 Cattermole: His return to fitness could be crucial in the next few weeks – was always the player looking to organise and cajole
4 Januzaj: A disappointing afternoon got even worse in the final minutes as he was rightly dismissed for a crude foul
5 Defoe: Ran himself into the ground in an attempt to make an impact at his former home, but wasted a decent first-half chance
4 Pienaar: Fluffed Sunderland’s best chance by a distance as he shot tamely from the edge of the six-yard box, enabling Walker to clear
Subs:
Watmore (for Pienaar, 63): Provided some energy down the left-hand side, but wasted a couple of decent positions with some poor passing 5
Khazri (for Kirchhoff, 78)
McNair (for Denayer, 90)
(not used): Mika (gk), Love, O’Shea, Gooch.
Man Of The Match: HEUNG-MIN SON – Spurs’ South Korean midfielder has been in fine form at the start of this season, and caused a succession of problems down Sunderland’s right flank.
