DICK Advocaat has left talk about his future unclear amid speculation that he will quit Sunderland if he fails to oversee a first Premier League victory of the season against West Ham on Saturday.

The experienced Dutchman, speaking in a feisty pre-match press conference which was cut short, did not clarify the situation, only stating that anything could happen in football after initially stating he would be still in charge on Monday.

The Northern Echo:

The Black Cats have failed to win any of their seven league games so far and find themselves sitting bottom of the table once more.

It is a situation which has led to increased speculation about the head coach's future, with claims on Friday stating that he could walk if the poor run does not end at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Asked if he will go if Sunderland lose, Advocaat said: "Definitely not."

But then he continued: "I don’t know exactly where that has come from.

"I always think in facts. The fact is it is now Friday and I am manager of Sunderland.

"But what will happen on Sunday, or a week after Sunday, or nine months after Sunday ... then I will tell you the real story. But now I am still here."

Advocaat was then asked if he was still a long way from stepping down. like he was a fortnight ago in the same media suite at the Academy of Light.

He said: "Nothing has changed. When I think it is time to do something then I will do so. Today is not the time to do something.

"For me it’s important to discuss what happens tomorrow, that’s the reason we are here, not to say what maybe will happen on Sunday or a week later."

He added: "The fact is you can be ill tomorrow. Why do we always talk about 'if, if, if'. The fact is I am here and tomorrow I am here.

"But what happens after that – it is the same for all managers – things can change in a day, in a week, in a month, in nine months."

Advocaat also revealed that Adam Johnson and Danny Graham will not be in contention to face the Hammers.
