SUNDERLAND dropped back down to the foot of the Premier League after Ryan Mason struck late to hand Tottenham a first win of the season.
After an encouraging opening 45 minutes from the Black Cats – who had new signings Fabio Borini and Ola Toivonen making first starts – Spurs controlled things after the restart and got the solitary goal to clinch the points.
Sunderland had their chances, but it was Mason who latched on to Eric Lamela’s 82nd minute pass before lifting his shot over Costel Pantilimon to leave the home side disappointed again.
It means Sunderland are still searching for a first league win of the season after losing three of their opening five games.
