DICK ADVOCAAT has persuaded Lee Cattermole to extend his stay at Sunderland by a further five years.

The Black Cats midfielder, a fans’ favourite for his committed style, was about to enter the final year of his contract but has agreed the new terms which tie him to the Stadium of Light until 2021.

Cattermole, 27, joined from Wigan in 2009 for £5m when Steve Bruce was in charge and he has been a key player under every manager since with the exception of his run-in with Paolo Di Canio.

Advocaat said: “Lee is the controller of the side. He is a motivator, a leader and central to the success of our team. To know that he will be with us for many years to come is very important to the club.”

And Sunderland’s sporting director Lee Congerton said: “Lee is a hugely important part of our team, both on and off the field. He has ten years of experience playing in the Premier League, which is incredible when you consider he is still only 27 years old, and we are delighted that he has committed his long-term future to Sunderland.”

Cattermole had attracted interest from Stoke City last season but was never in any rush to turn his back on Wearside. He was impressed by Advocaat's short stint at the back of last season and is hoping for improved results under the Dutchman next year.
