MIDDLESBROUGH’S Under-21s clinched the Barclays Under-21s Second Division title without kicking a ball last night.
Boro, who sealed promotion last week after defeating Aston Villa and have one match remaining, can not be caught at the top of the table because second-placed Reading were beaten at Wolves.
Middlesbrough will play their last game on Saturday at Stoke with a 2pm kick-off.
Young Boro defender Dael Fry Tweeted: “Buzzing to have helped the Under-21s win the league. What a season it’s been.”
NEWCASTLE UNITED’S Under-21s finished the season in the Second Division with a 3-2 defeat to West Brom at the Hawthorns.
West Brom earned the lead when Tyler Roberts finished, but Callum Roberts struck a sweet 25-yard drive in to the bottom corner.
Just when Newcastle thought they might have earned a point, the Baggies hit two late goals when Tahvon Campbell struck two inside four minutes to earn a healthy lead. Not even Daniel Barlaser’s stunning 25-yard free-kick could nick something for Newcastle.
SUNDERLAND ended their Under-21s Premier League season in style with a 1-0 win over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light.
Duncan Watmore, who many believe should be given a chance at first team level, was the star of the show and scored the only goal of the game seven minutes after half-time when he calmly finished after controlling a long pass.
Chelsea had their moments as well, but it was Watmore’s sixth goal in six games that sealed a fifth win from an unbeaten last six matches for the Black Cats.
