Goals:

0-1: Murray (48, headed home at the back post after Bolasie’s right-wing cross deflected off Vergini)

0-2: Bolasie (51, outpaced the defence to slot home after Murray flicked on a long ball from the back)

0-3: Bolasie (54, sprinted away from O’Shea to reach Jedinak’s through ball and chip the advancing Pantilimon)

0-4: Bolasie (62, rounded Pantilimon to slot home after Murray brushed aside O’Shea and rolled the ball into the area)

Bookings: Rodwell (16, foul), Dann (18, foul), Cattermole (24, foul)

Referee: Anthony Taylor (Wythenshawe) – Was probably right to book Rodwell for his crunching first-half challenge, although other referees might have reached for the red 6

Attendance: 42,073

Entertainment: ****

SUNDERLAND (4-3-3):

4 Pantilimon: Hardly covered himself in glory for Bolasie’s hat-trick goal but was left exposed by the dreadful defending in front of him

3 Jones: Afforded Bolasie way too much room down the Palace left and should have been closer to Murray for the opener

3 Vergini: All over the place as Palace scored their goals in the second half, with his positional play especially suspect

2 O’Shea: The main culprit as Sunderland collapsed, with his lack of pace and inability to outmuscle Murray both repeatedly exposed

4 Van Aanholt: Set up Wickham’s goal and hit the bar with a shot, but his defensive failings were all too apparent at the other end

4 Rodwell: Replaced the suspended Larsson, but was unable to replicate the Swede’s energy or willingness to cover a lot of ground

3 Cattermole: Picked up a needless booking for a first-half shirt pull and was clearly nervous about getting sent off from that point on

4 Gomez: Reverted to anonymity after an impressive derby showing and barely featured as an attacking force

5 Defoe: Wasn’t his day, although he was still dropping deep and running into channels in an attempt to spark his side into life

4 Fletcher: Tested Speroni with a first-half volley, but wasn’t able to hold the ball up and bring his team-mates into play

6 WICKHAM: One of the few players whose head didn’t drop, and claimed his first goal since January with a last-minute volley

Subs:

Johnson (for Gomez, 59): The game was already up by the time he came on, but he could find himself starting in the next game against Stoke 5

Bridcutt (for Cattermole, 65): Should probably have been on earlier given Cattermole’s struggles at the heart of midfield 5

(not used): Mannone (gk), Reveillere, Coates, Buckley, Graham.

CRYSTAL PALACE (4-2-3-1):

Speroni 6; Ward 6, Dann 7, Delaney 6, Souare 5 (Kelly 34, 6); Jedinak 7, McArthur 6; Zaha 7, Puncheon 8, BOLASIE 9 (Sanogo 70); Murray 8.

Subs (not used): Hennessey (gk), Hangeland, Ledley, Gayle, Ameobi.

Man Of The Match: YANNICK BOLASIE – Claimed his first hat-trick in senior football as his pace and mobility enabled him to rip the Sunderland defence apart.
