GUS POYET will formally appeal against a Football Association charge of improper conduct at a hearing next week.

The Sunderland head coach was charged after kicking a container of drinks bottles during Sunderland's 1-1 draw at Hull a week and a half ago.

While Poyet went on to confront Hull boss Steve Bruce on the touchline, the charge only relates to the incident with the drinks bottles.

Even if he is found guilty, Poyet is extremely unlikely to receive a touchline ban, and the Uruguayan wants the opportunity to give his side of the story to FA officials.

Poyet said: "It’s good to clarify – I was charged for kicking the bucket, not for a bust-up with Steve Bruce, no.

"That’s 100% true because we wrtoe to them (FA) and they wrote back. It’s only for kicking the bucket. It depends what you understand by improper conduct. We can look back to many, many incidents.

“I’ve been in charge here for maybe 60 games (74) and I haven’t had one complaint, one issue. I haven’t been ‘reminded of my responsibilities’, nothing. We live in football, we agree or disagree but we don’t go over the line."

Poyet has not apologised to Bruce following the pair's touchline altercation, but does not feel he has to account for his conduct alongside the former Sunderland boss on what was a highly-charged night at the KC Stadium.

He said: "There was nothing to forgive. It was just one thing I said, he said ‘I didn’t.’ I was 100 per cent convinced of something that happened in there and I went to tell him, shaking hands.

"If you see the whole situation I was very calm, but I got sent off for kicking the bucket. When he did it, I told the referee, ‘Yeah, I kicked the bucket, but come on. What’s the problem?’ Maybe the official needs to lock it!"
