CONNOR WICKHAM will miss Saturday’s game at Swansea City – and the Sunderland striker could face a fortnight on the sidelines after damaging his calf in the warm-up before Tuesday night’s FA Cup win at Fulham.

Wickham had a scan on his damaged calf yesterday, and the results have revealed a tear that will definitely keep him out of this weekend’s trip to the Liberty Stadium.

He is also expected to miss next week’s home game with QPR, and is a major doubt for the FA Cup fifth-round tie at Bradford City a week on Sunday.

Lee Cattermole has also been ruled out of Saturday’s game with Swansea because of a combination of knee and groin problems.

“Connor has a calf problem,” confirmed Poyet. “We sent him for a scan yesterday. We had more scans yesterday than any club in England!

“It's a typical muscle injury. You can't put a number of weeks on it – people put this grade one, grade two, grade three thing on it, we are all different – but I would say a couple of weeks should be the right number.

“If it takes a number of weeks or less, fair enough, but he's the one who's definitely out, him and Lee Cattermole. The rest all have a chance.”

Poyet will carry out late fitness checks on three more players, with Adam Johnson, Emanuele Giaccherini and Jack Rodwell all currently rated as “50-50” for Saturday’s trip to Wales.

Johnson is recovering from surgery on his thumb, Giaccherini took a hefty challenge in the closing stages of Tuesday’s win at Craven Cottage, while Rodwell was left out of the squad for the Fulham match on the morning of the game.

“Depending on who or where will depend what we do,” said Poyet. “Giaccherini has a problem – oof, what a tackle that was on him!

“The wound on Jonno's thumb is being checked this afternoon. We'll make a decision tomorrow but we may need to take a risk somewhere.”
