JERMAIN DEFOE has trained with his new team-mates and is ready to score the goals to fire Sunderland up the Premier League table.

Defoe is on the verge of completing a move worth around £14m, including wages, from Major League Soccer side Toronto after spending Wednesday at the Academy of Light.

The 32-year-old expects everything to be finalised in time for him to face his former club Tottenham on Saturday.

He told the Daily Mirror: “I felt so sharp. All that hard work has paid off. I can’t wait to start scoring goals for Sunderland. Everybody knows how much I love English football and I still feel I have a lot to offer.

“People might look at my age but I have always looked after myself and I hope I can show that with my performances.”

While everything has been agreed to see Defoe move to the Stadium of Light, the man he replaces still has some work to do to secure his move away from Wearside.

American striker Jozy Altidore is flying out to Canada to try to complete his part of the Defoe deal. He is in line to join Toronto.
