JOHN O’Shea has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him at Sunderland until 2017, while the Black Cats have handed former France international Anthony Reveillere a trial at the club.

O’Shea celebrated his 100th cap for the Republic of Ireland with a goal in their draw against world champions Germany on Tuesday night and the defender capped off a memorable week by pledging his future to the Black Cats.

The 33-year-old’s current deal on Wearside was due to expire next summer, but the Black Cats have moved quickly to tie O’Shea down having lost Jack Colback and Phil Bardsley in the summer.

Colback joined rivals Newcastle after failing to agree a new deal before his contract ended, while Bardsley joined Stoke under similar circumstances, and Poyet is keen to avoid losing more key players.

Connor Wickham’s future on Wearside remains a doubt with the striker yet to agree a deal ahead of his contract expiring next summer, but the Black Cats boss is relieved to have his captain on board for another two years.

“I am delighted that John has agreed to stay with us for at least another two years,” Poyet said. “He is our captain, one of our leaders and I am sure he will continue to help us get better and stronger as a team. I really look forward to continuing to work with John.”

O’Shea has spent over 14 years in the Premier League after joining from Manchester United in 2011 and was handed the captain’s armband last summer.

He said: “Since I arrived at Sunderland I have enjoyed every minute and I’m really happy that I can continue here for another two years.

“To captain a club like this and to play in front of our fantastic supporters is a huge honour and I look forward to showing my commitment to the club on the pitch in the years to come.”

Meanwhile, Reveillere held discussions with Sunderland last week and has been given a chance to impress on Wearside.

The 34-year-old right-back was released by Serie A outfit Napoli at the end of last season and with Poyet lacking options at the back he could be handed a shirt-term deal.

It remains to be seen whether that will happen before tomorrow’s trip to Southampton, so Santiago Vergini may revert to right-back if Billy Jones is unfit.

Jones limped off in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Middlesbrough at the Academy of Light last week, and his absence would leave Poyet without a natural right-back for the trip to St Mary’s.

Vergini did start the season at full-back while Jones recovered from a hamstring injury and Wes Brown’s return to fitness would allow the Argentina international to move across.

Meanwhile, Sunderland have also been linked with a move for Barcelona starlet Alen Halilovic.

Reports have emerged that Poyet is keen to sign the 18-year-old midfielder, who signed for Barca B in the summer, on loan.
