Referee: Anthony Taylor (Wythenshawe): Home fans gave the impression that they were hard done by, but Taylor was fair and balanced. 8

BURNLEY (4-4-2): Heaton 7; Trippier 6, Duff 6, Shackell 6, Mee 4; Arfield 6, Marney 5, Jones 5 (Wallace 86), Boyd 6 (Reid 92); Sordell 5 (Barnes 63, 6), JUTKIEWICZ 7. Subs not used: Gilks, Keane, Ward, Kightly.
SUNDERLAND (4-3-3):
6 Mannone: Saved well from Arfield in the second half and will be pleased with a clean sheet, although his distribution under pressure was lacking
6 Vergini: Eased through the game, getting forward well to give Sunderland some much-needed width, although his lack of pace was exposed at times
6 O'Shea: Made some decent aerial interceptions but let Jutkiewicz get past him too often, and was booked for a foul on the former Middlesbrough striker in the second half
6 Brown: Dealt well with the threat of two strikers and showed the nous needed to get through a game without conceding
7 VAN AANHOLT: Up and down the left flank, providing decent support for Johnson on the wing, while he coped well with Trippier and Arfield as Burnley attacked;
7 Rodwell: His best performance for Sunderland since his summer signing from Manchester City, he looked sharp, got forward well and looked a threat with the ball at his feet
6 Larsson: A steady display on the right side of the midfield, providing some decent crosses which brought some of Sunderland’s better opportunities
6 Cattermole: Effective without being spectacular, Cattermole came through a difficult start, settled well and kept the ball ticking over nicely deep in midfield;
6 Johnson: Unable to make his influence count, but buzzed around with intent and made some decent passes before his substitution
6 Wickham: All too often used as an out ball with long passes from the back, and was not given many opportunities with the ball at his feet
6 Giaccherini: Looked sharp before his injury, comfortable on the ball and disciplined out of possession
Substitutes:
Gomez (for Larsson, 67) – Did not have any time to make a real difference and his introduction seemed to disrupt Sunderland’s rhythm. 5
Altidore (for Johnson, 67) – Was wasteful in possession and did not seem to be on the same wavelength as his fellow attackers. 4
Buckley (for Giaccherini, 73)
Not used: Pantilimon, Jones, Bridcutt, Graham.
Man of the match
PATRICK van Aanholt - His best display in a Sunderland shirt to date. Defended well and got forward with real purpose, and was unlucky not to score a late goal
