SUNDERLAND head coach Gustavo Poyet faces competition for Brazilian forward Jonas as he eyes a potential short-term move for the free agent.

Jonas, 30, is without a club after leaving Valencia and his representatives are trying to broker a deal before his match fitness levels dip too far.

He is interested in moving to the Premier League and the Black Cats have been approached about landing him after failing to lure Fabio Borini to Wearside from Liverpool.

However, Tottenham have told the forward’s advisors that they are also weighing up whether to offer him something concrete, so Sunderland need to act fast if they want to do a deal.

Borini, meanwhile, is determined to justify his decision to stay at Anfield rather than accept a switch to Sunderland or Queens Park Rangers.

The Italian scored ten goals during last season’s loan at the Stadium of Light but he thinks he can score more than that this time around despite sitting behind Mario Balotelli, Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert in the Reds’ pecking order.

Borini said: “From this season I expect a lot of things. I want to set a record in terms of personal goals and last year I got ten.”

This month’s Under-21 game with Tottenham on Monday, September 22 has been moved to the Eppleton Colliery Welfare ground in Hetton-le-Hole from its original venue at the Stadium of Light.
