Spennymoor 1 Leamington 0.

Mark Anderson’s goal ten minutes from time put Spennymoor back into the play off places against Leamington.

This was Moors’ third game in six days, and that gruelling schedule showed at times, but they dug into what remained of their energy reserves to win their first league game in four.

Moors started shakily, and were fortunate not to go a goal behind in the opening minutes. First, Matt Dodd got away down the right and pulled the ball back into the middle for Danny Udoh to turn quickly and fire just wide, then Ahmed Obeng burst into the box past two defenders on the left and fired across the face of goal.

But Moors nearly took the lead when Mark Anderson laid a pass off from Chris Chantler for Shane Henry to curl wide from the edge of the box.

However, another chance came the way of the Brakes when the Moors defence failed to deal with a ball into their box from the right, and Obeng’s volley was well saved low down to his right by Dan Lowson.

There was also a loud appeal for handball as several players jumped for the ball from the visitors when a corner came into the box from the Leamington left.

Leamington had another chance when Connor Gudger burst forward and fired just over the top, and then had another penalty appeal turned down when Dodd claimed he was bundle to the floor by Chantler.

Moors themselves also had a penalty shout turned down by referee Rebeccah Welch when Glen Taylor claimed that he was pushed to the ground with his back to goal.

Leamington again looked more dangerous at the start of the second half, and a dipping strike by Jack Edwards from 25 yards struck the top of the bar.

Taylor put a free header over the bar from a Griffiths corner as Moors laboured, and Chantler forced Tony Breedon into a good save at the foot of his post with a low shot.

Brad Fewster nearly broke through when slipped the ball past the advancing keeper from a tight angle, but defender Jamie Hood got back and cleared.

Moors had a great chance to take the lead on 77 minutes when Griffiths found Ryan Hall with a great through ball and with just the keeper to beat, but Breedon blocked his shot.

But Moors broke though on 80 minutes when Anderson played a good 1-2 with Hall in the area, allowing Anderson to sidefoot past Breedon, although Leamington angrily claimed that the game should have been stopped in the build up because of an injury to one of their defenders, Connor Gudger.

Leamington spurned a great chance for an equaliser right at the end when Junior English and jack Edwards got in each other’s way to a loose ball six yards out.
