Spennymoor Town 2 Solihull Moors 0.

Spennymoor are now hoping for a home tie in the last 16 of the Buildbase FA Trophy after a comfortable home win over Solihull on Saturday.

Moors thoroughly deserved to win the third round game against opponents from a league higher, and nobody will fancy coming to the Brewery Field if Jason Ainsley’s side are drawn at home in the next round.

They go into Monday’s draw in illustrious company, with Leyton Orient, Dover Athletic, Billericay and Sutton United amongst the big names left in the competition, and also £20,000 better off in prize money for their three wins so far.

“We were superb from start to finish,” said Ainsley. “I thought we had control all the way through the game, and we got stronger in the second half when we were playing up the slope. The pitch was heavy, but that didn’t really bother us.

“I thought we wanted to win the game more, and had more hunger than Solihull especially in the second half.

“It’s a good win for us, because Solihull have brought in some very good players recently and in their previous league game had drawn with leaders Macclesfield and before that had beaten Barrow.

“We’re delighted to get through to the last 16, especially as we had to go to extra time against Gainsborough just a few days before on a heavy pitch.

“We’d love to be drawn at home now, and there are some big names left in the competition. It would be great to be drawn at home to Leyton Orient, we don’t fancy a long away trip.”

Moors started well, and David Foley had an effort saved early on Solihull keeper Max O’Leary, but at the other end keeper Jordan Porter pulled off a good save from Jamie Osborne.

Moors slowly got on top, and they took the lead thanks to a gift from O’Leary when he dropped a harmless cross from the left straight to the feet of Mark Anderson, who tapped in.

Solihull might have fancied their chances going down the Brewery Field slope in the second half, but but it was Moors who stayed in control.

Ryan Hall set up Rob Ramshaw who fired straight at O’Leary, and Glen Taylor was just off target.

And it was all over on 79 minutes when sub Andrew Johnson, who had only been on the field for a matter of minutes, pounced on a poor O’Leary clearance and slotted the ball home.

Moors: Porter, Griffiths, Mason, Ramshaw, Tait, Curtis, Hall, Henry, Taylor, Anderson (sub Dixon 80), Foley (sub Johnson 75).

Subs: Bland, Chantler, Fewster.

Attendance 570.
