FC United of Manchester 2 Spennymoor Town 3.

Spennymoor made it two wins from two games in the Vanarama National League North with a pulsating 3-2 away win at FC United of Manchester.

Moors led 2-0 at one stage only for United to hit back and equalise. But Moors showed plenty of character to regain the lead, and hold on against strong pressure to put them joint top of the table.

Moors, who brought in Chris Mason for the injured James Curtis, nearly took the lead on 6 minutes when Glen Taylor headed a free kick from Mattie Dixon just wide, and three minutes later Andy Johnson forced FC United keeper Lloyd Allinson into a good save.

It was no real surprise that hard working Moors took the lead on 18 minutes, when a well hit free kick by Kallum Griffiths from 25 yards out took a deflection off a defender and beat Allinson.

And they nearly went 2-0 up a few minutes later, when Taylor was agonisingly wide with a header from a Griffiths cross.

Taylor missed another good header from a few yards, but there was no mistake on 28 minutes with an excellent goal for Moors’ second. Johnson picked the ball up on the right, beat a defender in a good run into the box, then beat Allinson with a delightful shot into the top corner of the net to put Moors well in control.

They could have added more before half time, but Taylor and then Ryan Hall were both denied. United through managed to get going, and stunned Moors by pulling a goal back through Jason Gilchrist from an assist by Connor McCarthy.

The unfortunate Taylor missed another chance from another Griffiths cross before half time.

United pulled level on 52 minutes, when McCarthy’s shot was parried by Lowson and Danny Wisdom pounced to steer the ball home.

But Moors showed their resilience, and Taylor finally found the back of the net with a good header from a Matty Dixon corner to put Moors back in front again.

The game went from end to end after that, but Moors defended well, while sub Jake Orrell broke away at the other end but Allinson saved.

And Moors breathed a sigh of relief in stoppage time when McCarthy headed wide from a few yards.
