Sutton Coldfield 1 Spennymoor Town 0.

Four games in eight days took their toll on Spennymoor when they were beaten at lowly Sutton Coldfield on Saturday.

Moors were beaten by a second half goal on Sutton’s 3G surface, but they are still second in the table on goal difference going into the last fortnight of the season.

“It was one game too many in a short space of time,” said manager Jason Ainsley. “We found it difficult to play on that pitch, plus we had to make a couple of enforced changes because of injury in the first half.

“There were some tired legs out there, four games in a week was too much, especially with having to travel as far as Matlock and Sutton Coldfield in that time.

“But I can’t complain too much. The players have done very well to get us into this position with five games left – two months ago we would have taken this position. Everyone has an off day, and hopefully that’s what it was on Saturday.”

Joe Tait and David Dowson both missed early chances for Moors, then Mark Anderson struck the post midway through the half.

However, Sutton fired a warning when Ryan Robbins broke through, but Moors keeper Dan Lowson saved well.

In the second half, Tait hit the bar with a header, but Sutton stunned Moors by taking the lead on 62 minutes when Max Wright charged through the middle of the Moors defence from the halfway line and beat Lowson.

After that, Moors couldn’t break down a resolute Sutton defence, and only had a couple of half chances.

Moors’ next game is at bottom club Skelmersdale on Tuesday night.

Team: Lowson, Griffiths, Baldwin (sub Smith 70), Chandler, Tait , Curtis (sub Mason 46), Ramshaw, Henry, Taylor, Dowson (sub Armstrong 20), Anderson.
