STEVE McCLAREN’S record in English football – since his international job – doesn’t inspire. Last season neither did Newcastle United. It won’t take long for the Ashley Out brigade to surface if things aren’t improving on last season, the undercurrent will always be there at St James’ Park. Is the squad good enough to compete for a top-seven spot? Even the top half will be a big ask despite summer signings.

There’s likely to be three Premier League teams worse than the Black Cats so they will stay up, but it’s up to Dick Advocaat to really change the playing outlook. SO close last season, it’s time to go one better this time out. The methodical Aitor Karana will ensure Boro compete at the top and they will be up there throughout.
