Team Northumbria won the first of a possible four trophies when they beat Whitehaven 2-0 to become second division champions.

The division’s top scorer, Peter Watling, grabbed his 39th league goal of the season to put TN in front, then just before half time Mark Fenwick scored the second.

TN play Newcastle United reserves in the Northumberland Senior Cup final tonight, Northallerton in the Ernest Armstrong Final on Wednesday, and on Saturday play Spennymoor in the league cup semi final.

Gillford Park are runners up after they beat Esh Winning 3-0. Gavin Barton was amongst the goals for Gillford, scoring once to give him 21 for the club since he signed from Spennymoor. Mike Reed and Ryan Errington scored the others.

Esh had midfielder Gary Turton dismissed for two yellows in the first half.

Esh Winning manager Andrew Soppitt said: “The sending off in the first half was very harsh and spoilt the game. We were excellent in patches but tiredness kicked in.”

Hebburn were soundly beaten 4-1 at home by Crook Town. Lee Harrison put Hebburn into the lead from a free kick after 23 minutes, but a minute later former Darlington midfielder Richard Hodgson scored his 20th league goal of the season with a 20 yarder. Hebburn were then reduced to ten men when Alex Benjamin was dismissed for a foul on Ben Riding, and then Crook went 3-1 up with two strikes from the edge of the box by David Paul. Craig Hughes got a fourth just after half time with a looping header.

Crook manager Gary Pearson said: “It was a great finish to end the season, We bossed the game from start to finish, and we were the better side even before the sending off which was an easy decision for the ref. Hodgy has now got 25 goals from midfield in an outstanding season. We hope to join Hebburn in the first division the season afetr next.”

West Allotment and Easington had a goal fest, with Allotment coming out on top by 8-4. There were seven goals in the first half, with Allotment’s Gary Day scoring three of them. Day added another just after half time, with Dean Lee, Chris Hutchinson, Martin Soulsby and William Hudson scoring the others. Carl Winspear, Chris Tarn and Haydon Pace scoring the others.

West Allotment manager Paul Stoneman said: “It was a like a pre-season game. It could have been 12-10.”

North Shields ran riot away at Thornaby, giving new manager Graham Fenton his best win so far as manager in a 6-0 win. James Luccock, Adam Rowntree, Keith Douglas, Dean Holmes (2) and Danny Patterson scoring the goals.

Thornaby manager Ray Morton said; “We decided to give a few of the young lads a game.”

Chester-le-Street just got the better of Alnwick, winning by the odd goal in seven.

Scott Swanston scored a hat trick for Chester after Alnwick had gone 2-0 up early on through Danny Lowes and John Colley. Callum Patton made it 4-2 for Chester before Tony Brown scored a late goal for Alnwick.

Birtley were also amongst the goals, hitting Seaham Red Star for six to give them 100 goals for the season. Danny Smart scored four of them to give him 30 for the season, with Scott Emmerson and Matthew Hornsby scoring the others. Tom Price scored Seaham’s consolation.

Birtley manager Scott Oliver said: “A nice end to the season, We are pleased with finishing fifth top. It’s been a very enjoyable season, and I hope we can build on it.”

Northallerton finished one goal shy of the 100 mark when they beat Washington 3-2 at Ainderby Road.

They led 3-0 at one point with goals from Steve Butterworth, Gavin Parkin and Colin Anderson, before Washington launched a late revival with two goals by Michael Latimer. Northallerton are in the EA Trophy final on Wednesday night at Norton.

Northallerton manager Mark Fanning said: “It was a poor performance overall. Too many had minds on Wednesday night’s final but a 12 minute spell at the start of the second half saw us score three times, and that was enough to win the game – just.”

Horden finish second bottom after losing 2-1 at home to Whickham. Darren Atkinson gave Horden the lead, but Whickham hit back with goals by Steve Aiston and Sam McIntosh.
