Darlington RA crashed out of the FA Cup in an eleven goal thriller at Brinkburn Road last night against South Shields .

The RA started badly when keeper Alex Kell conceded a soft goal when he failed to gather a right wing cross from Jonny Wightman, then Peter Kane flicked in a Lee Bell header for the second. Graham Whitehead pulled one back wit ha vicious inswinging free kick from the right, but Shields went 4-1 up by the 50th minute through Bell and Chris Feasey.

The RA hit back with two goals by Steve Allison to make it 4-3, but some poor defending at the other end let in Chris Feasey for 5-3. James Evison got another back for the RA, but Feasey made the game safe in the 90th minute, with Freddie Huscroft scoring for the RA in stoppage time. the first game on Saturday ended in a goalless draw.

Darlington RA manager Nick Harrison said: "I was delighted with our performance. We went toe-to-toe with them for 90 minutes , but pure naivety cost us , particularly at the back. We were constantly playing catch up, but I can only be proud of the effort and quality we showed throughout."

 

Consett were beaten 3-2 at home by Tadcaster Albion in extra time. They were behind twice in the second half, with Lewis Teesdale and Michael Mackay in turn equalising – Mackay in the 90th minute – then Jeff got the winner with a free kick in extra time.

Billingham Town beat Chester-le-Street , with a goal after 77 minutes when Jamie Owens hit the post, and the ball ran along the goal line for Micky Dunwell to tap in. Chester-le-Street manager Colin Wake said: "We got what we deserved, which was nothing. A poor performance and never really hit the hights of Saturday, and only started to play when they scored with 15 minutes to go, and still never really threatened.Really disappointing and scoreline could have been worse but for good performances by our back four and keeper."

Newton Aycliffe are out, beaten 3-0 in their replay at Holker Old Boys. They had the better of the first half, but a missed penalty by Kris Hughes when he put the ball over the bar was the turning point. Phil Coombe scored with a 30 yarder for the Cumbrians, Gareth Smith scored direct from a corner, and Forbes tapped in the third. Manager Allan Oliver said: "If we'd scored the penalty it would have been a different game. We were well beaten in the end."

Sunderland RCA lost 2-1 at home to Ashington, even though they took the lead with a strike by David Gordon. Marc Walton missed a penalty for Ashington, but they recovered and won with goals by Andrew Johnson and Phil Bell. Sunderland RCA manager Neil Hixon said: "It was a good first half, and we looked comfortable when we were winning 1-0. But in the second half we never played and looked heavy legged."

Jarrow Roofing did well at Pickering, coming back from 2-1 down with six minutes left to win 4-2. Craig Nelson, Lee McMahon and Jamie Marshall scored in a frantic finish. Lee Salt gave Pickeriing the lead at half time, but David Molloy equalsied at the start of the second half. Steve Baxter made it 2-1 on 77 minutes before Roofing stunned their hosts. Manager Richie McLoughlin said: "It as a great result. The lads played well and gave their all, I'm delighted for them."

Birtley advanced into the next round, beating North Shields 2-0 with goals by Dan Smart and Jack Honour. Manager Scott Oliver said: "They dominated the first 20 minutes, then we made a change which meant we were much tighter after that. Great attitudes and commitment saw us through. For a club like ours with no sponsor, the £1,000 prize money is a fortune."

 

League champions Spennymoor won the Cleator Cup against League Cup winners Team Northumbria 2-0. They took the lead on 72 minutes when Micky Rae scored from a Joe Walton cut back, and then a mistake by the TN keeper allowed Rae to set up Mark Davison for the second. The two teams meet again on Saturday in the league.
