South Shields overcame Morpeth at the second time of asking to reach the last 16 of the FA Buildbase Vase.

Shields seemed to be going out of the competition last Saturday when they were losing 4-2 with ten minutes left before the match was abandoned because of floodlight failure. The game was switched to Morpeth at lunchtime.

They got off to a flier last night, taking the lead after 9 minutes when Gavin Cogdon scored with a shot on the turn.

It was 2-0 on 11 minutes when David Foley fired home, and Morpeth missed a chance to get back into the game when Jordan Fry was brought down in the area, and Sean Taylor put the penalty over the bar. Just on half time, Cogdon got another from close range. Shields stayed in control after half time, and Foley finished off Morpeth with a terrific shot into the top corner with eight minutes left. To rub salt into Morpeth’s wounds, Keith Graydon was shown his second yellow near the end.

Shields are now away to Team Solent in the next round on 28th January.
