Marske United came from behind to earn a third round FA Vase place by beating Runcorn Linnets 6-2 at Mount Pleasant last night.

Marske’s Adam Preston almost scored twice in the first 15 minutes, then Glen Butterworth had an effort cleared off the line.

But Runcorn stunned Marske by taking the lead on 19 minutes when Kurt Sherlock curled the ball over Marske keeper Robbie Deane from the edge of the box.

But Marske levelled just after the half hour, when Jamie Owens beat a defender and then lifted the ball over the advancing keeper, and right on half time Owens fired them in front from a Butterworth 1-2.

Marske went 3-1 up two minutes after half time when Craig Gott picked up a poor clearance and set up Preston to beat the visiting keeper, then Nathan Mulligan made it 4-1 from a Luke Bythway free kick. Jason Carey pulled one back for Runcorn with a powerful shot, but Owens then completed his hat trick from the edge of the box. Preston then made it 6-2 with a 20 yarder into the top corner.

South Shields beat Consett, from a division above them, by an extra time goal at Belle View in their re-arranged second round tie.

Both sides went close early in the game, while Shields lost midfielder Julio Arca because of injury midway through the first half. Consett striker Michael Mackay then put a good chance over the bar from close range.

There was nothing in the game in the second half, until Consett keeper Peter Jeffries pulled off a good save from a David Foley effort. Shields midfielder Lee Paul Scroggins went close with a header, as did Consett’s Calvin Smith from long distance. Jordan Lavery hit the Shields post with an overhead kick in stoppage time.

Mackay then missed an open goal in extra time, and also put a header wide.

Consett paid the penalty for those missed chances when Adam Sakr scored from a Foley cross.

In the Northern League first division, Newcastle Benfield are now ten points above the danger zone after they won 4-0 at Seaham Red Star.

Benfield took the lead with a goal by Benfield joint manager Paul Brayson, and early in the second half Dean Walker and Chris Hardy made it 3-0. Benfield’s other joint manager, Mark Convery, made it 4-0.

In the Ernest Armstrong Cup, Chester-le-Street easily beat Alnwick 6-1.
