West Auckland manager Andy Campbell is hoping that his side’s 4-2 extra time win at Darwen in the second qualifying round of the Vase on Saturday is a turning point for them.

West have only won once in ten league games this season, but Campbell is hoping that they will be able to build on this win.

“Darwen is a tough place to go to and win,” he said. “We should have been more than 1-0 up at half time, and when we went 2-1 down, the lads kept their composure, worked hard and were really confident. I’m pleased that we’ve given something back to the club and the fans.”

West, who reached the Vase final just three seasons ago, got off to a good start after 17 minutes with a strike by Shaun Hudson and nearly went 2-0 up but Matthew Bell was denied by the post.

Darwen equalised four minutes into the second half, and went 2-1 up after 71 minutes. After Kris Goss hit the post for West, Anthony Hume levelled three minutes from the end of normal time.

Darwen hit the post in stoppage time, but West took control in extra time with a goal by Jake Fenton. They finished the game off through Hume right at the end.

Darlington RA had a good 3-1 home win over Hall Road Rangers from the Northern Counties East League, with Kerry Hedley the start of the show.

He scored the first goal of the game following a good dribble, then scored an excellent goal for the second, when he flicked the ball over a defender’s head and volleyed past the keeper.

Hall Road pulled one back before half time, but Jim Wilson made it 3-1 with a good free kick.

Darlington RA manager Warren Moncur said; “Kerry Hedley scored a wonder goal for our second. Once we went 3-1 up we contained them and coasted to the win in the end.

Sunderland RCA also pulled off a good victory, beating Bridlington 3-2 after extra time. They got off to a good start when Callum Charlton ran through the Bridlington defence and fired past the keeper, but Brid equalised after 15 minutes through Tom Fleming.

The RCA could have won it just before the end of normal time, but the Brid keeper managed to get a foot to a penalty by Clayton Davies.

Liam Hatch put RCA ahead in extra time, but Brid levelled again through Lewis Clarkson. However RCA won it with seven minutes left with a 20 yard free kick by James Armstrong.

Sunderland RCA manager Marty Swales said; “James Armstrong scored a worldy for us to finish the game off, a great win.”

Newton Aycliffe bounced back from their FA Cup defeat in midweek by beating Barnoldswick 3-0.

Dennis Knight gave Aycliffe the lead with an excellent free kick, then Jordan Laidler split the Barnoldswick defence for Paul Garthwaite to fire home. They made the game safe when Laidler ran through and rounded the keeper.

Newton Aycliffe manager Peter Dixon said; “It took us a while to get started, but we’re happy to get through after playing at North Ferriby in midweek.”

There was quite a turnaround between Tow Law and Stokesley. After hammering Stokesley 8-1 in the league last week, Tow Law lost 3-0 on Saturday, again at Ironworks Road. Stokesley scored all their goals in the first half, the first of them in the opening minute through Antony Stephens. Gareth Brown and Matthew Hawkins were also on target.

Tow Law manager Steve Murray said; “We were awful.”

Stokesley manager Craig Winter said; “We’re very happy with the result and more importantly the performance. We stuck to the gameplan and the young lads worked their socks off. After last week changes were made and additional players brought in. The squad is finally starting to take shape and with a few more additions will see us getting our season back on track. Going back to basics proved what the players are capable of.”

Former Vase winners Whitley Bay easily beat West Allotment 5-1 at Hillheads. Debutant Michael Bell opened the scoring on 10 minutes from an Alex Kempster assist, and three minutes later Chris Reid scored from a corner.

Bell returned the favour for Kempster to score the third on 18 minutes, but then Reid put through his own goal at the other end.

Stephen Young fired the fourth in the second half, and Kris Hughes dribbled round the keeper for 5-1.

Whitley Bay manager Paddy Atkinson said; “It was a tough game but we managed to score three early goals. Happy with another two in the second half but we deserved to win.”

Team Northumbria won by 3-1 after extra time at Nelson, their goals coming from Joel Bradley, Luke Hannant and Steven McCarthy.

ENL Division Two South Shields pulled off a surprise, beating Washington from the division above by 2-1. Andy Bulford hit the crossbar before giving his side the lead with a header, and then Jonny Wightman volleyed in from an Adam Sakr cross.

Mark Davison pulled one back with a header from a Michael Coghlan corner.

Washington manager Steve Hutchinson said; “It was a bad day at the office, we never turned up. We were a lot better in the second half but we can’t give soft goals away the way we did today.”

Chester-le-Street just managed to overcome Heaton Stannington 4-3, even though they had striker Scott Heslop dismissed for over celebrating.

Heaton went 2-0 up in the first 20 minutes through Lee Johnson and Jonny Wright, but Lee Mole pulled a goal back. Danny Hepplewhite levelled with a rasping 35 yarder for Chester, but Heaton went back in front through Wright.

However, Scott Heslop equalised, but that was then dismissed for his celebrations in front of the Heaton fans. Heaton then had Brian Dodsworth red carded in normal time, and Michael Scott in extra time . Chester got the winner with a free kick by Andrew Grant-Soulsby.

Heaton Stannington assistant manager Geoff Walker said; “They scored the winner two minutes from the end of extra time. Good luck to Chester, they battled through right to the end.”

Chester-le-Street manager Colin Wake said; “What a cup tie. It had everything. We were poor for the first 30 minutes and were 2-0 down. From then on we bossed the game, but possibly a draw was a fair result. One final bit of quality from a free kick saw us win in extra time.”

Durham City won 4-2 at Bedlington. The Terriers scored first through new signing Ryan Drane, but City levelled when Callum Patton fired into the top corner.

Marc Walton restored Bedlington’s lead with a header, but Nicky Allen levelled from close range.

In extra time, Patton’s effort put Durham back into the lead, then right at the end Chris Wallace made sure.

Durham manager Ian Chandler said: "It was a tough encounter as expected but we made it much tougher than it should have been. Coming back from 0-1 and 1-2 down showed good character but in truth we gifted Bedlington their two goals by not concentrating enough. Callum Patton and Chris Wallace were excellent, but Callum Munro was man of the match, great attitude and display."

Seaham Red Star won their local derby 1-0 at Jarrow Roofing, Liam McBryde scoring the goal that mattered in the 31st minute. Paul Chow, who scored the fastest ever Vase final goal in his time at Whitley Bay, hit the bar for Roofing.

Jarrow Roofing manager Richie McLoughlin said; “We had no luck today, but better team lost. Good luck to Seaham in the next round.”

Seaham Red Star manager Mark Collingwood said; "It was an awful game. Our back four were tremendous, clean sheets are as good as goals. They had the lion's share of possession but we looked more dangerous on the counter attack. We want to avoid a Northern Legue club in the next round."

Norton and Stockton led Newcastle Benfield at half time, but they lost 4-1. Norton led with a goal by Jamie Poole on 19 minutes, but Benfield hit back with second half goals by Ben Addison, Steven Baptiste, Chris Hardy and Mark Convery.

Newcastle Benfield manager Steve Bowey said; “I was disappointed in the first half, but second half we bossed the game, we were excellent all over the park. Our subs changed the game.”

Norton manager Deano Browne said; “First half we huffed and puffed and were probably the better side. We went in 1-0 but we came out second half, struggled and we were well beaten. We conceded poor goals again, and that wasn’t good enough.”

Billingham Synthonia made Morpeth, from a division above them, fight all the way before going down 1-0, Michael Chilton scoring four minutes from the end with a header after the ball had hit the crossbar.

Morpeth manager Nick Gray said; “We’re delighted to get through in a game we controlled throughout.”

Easington gave Ashington a scare before the Northumbrians won 2-1. Kyle Downey put Ashington into the lead with a 25 yarder, but Easington levelled just before half time through Joe Kerridge. But Ashington’s Ben Harmison got the winner three minutes into the second half.

Ashington assistant manager Ian Skinner said; “We weren’t at our best, but we have a lot of injuries and people playing with little niggles and in cup football it’ about results and we got the right result today. Credit to Easington they pushed us all the way and they are a good side who will do well this year.”

Hebburn had a good 3-1 home win over Yorkshire Amateurs, Callum Smith, Chris Smith and Marc Costello scored their goals.

Hebburn manager Scott Oliver said; “We looked comfortable throughout, it was nice to have a full bench.”

Whickham lost 1-0 at home to Garforth.

The draw for the next round is made on Monday lunchtime
