Consett pulled off one of the surprises of the preliminary round when they beat Scarborough Athletic 2-0 at Belle View on Saturday.

Scarborough, who hadn’t conceded a goal this season before Saturday, are flying high in the EvoStik First Division North, but they were beaten by a goal in each half.

Consett manager Colin Myers, who was assistant manager of Blyth when they got through to the third round proper last season, said; “I thought we rattled them in the first half, we were the better team. We kept the game tight in the second half, but we kept missing chances and I was worried that they would score and get a replay. But we got a deserved second goal with ten minutes left.

“Scarborough are a very good side. They’ve brought in players from North Ferriby and Harrogate Town, they’re virtually a Conference North team. It says a lot for our lads to beat them.”

Consett went close through Calvin Smith and Luke Sullivan in the first half, and at the start of the second half Scarborough had defender Lloyd Henderson sent off for pulling back Michael Sweet when he was clean through.

Michael Mackay and Sweet were both denied by the keeper, then Sullivan hit the woodwork twice. But Sweet made it 2-0 when he scored from Smith’s pass five minutes from the end. Sullivan was sent off for two yellows late in the game, and will miss the next round against Colne.

Newton Aycliffe reached the first qualifying round for the first time ever when they beat Morpeth 2-0 at Moore Lane.

Matty Moffat proved what a valuable player he is, by scoring a goal in each half to put Aycliffe through.

Aycliffe manager Peter Dixon said; “It was a good win against a vey good side. It’s great to get through to the next stage for the first time ever at the club. Matty took his two chances very well. His two finishes were class, he’s played for me for a few years, and he’s never stopped improving.”

Aycliffe are now away to the winners of the replay between Brighouse and Atherton Collieries.

Bishop Auckland stumbled 2-1 at home to Jarrow Roofing.

Bishops keeper Mark Bell did well to save a penalty by Roofing’s John Campbell after 10 minutes, and Bishops took advantage to take the lead a few minutes later, when Glen Lane scored in a goalmouth scramble.

They missed a few chances and paid the penalty when Lewis Teasdale chested down a right wing cross and slipped the ball under Bell for the equaliser.

Roofing got on top in the second half, and after Campbell forced a good save out of Bell from way out on the left, Alex White headed the winner from a corner.

Bishop Auckland manager David Bayles said; “All those first half misses cost us.”

Jarrow Roofing manager Richie McLoughlin said; “It was a good battle. Both teams played well, but we’re happy to be in the next round.”

West Auckland led 2-0 at home to Washington, but conceded three goals in the last 14 minutes and lost 3-2.

West took the lead through a 25th minute Joe Kendrick penalty after Mattie Crossen was fouled, then Crossen made it 2-0 from the edge of the box.

But Washington pulled a goal back on 76 minutes through Michael Coghlan, and with six minutes left Mark Davison equalised. Washington kept going and got the winner in the last minute through Craig Hennis.

West Auckland manager Andy Campbell said; “It’s a cruel, cruel game. At 2-0, we were a little bit naïve, and let them come at us. I would have taken a draw at 2-2, but they kept going.”

Washington manager Steve Hutchinson said; “We didn’t really get going today but it was a great fightback and I’m pleased with the mentality.”

Guisborough came from behind to beat Newcastle Benfield 4-2 at the King George, and are now away to Ashton United.

Shane Jones fired Benfield into the lead, but Danny Earl set up Luke Bythway for the equaliser.

Paul Brayson restored Benfield’s lead wit ha deflected shot, but Guisborough equalised through Connor Smith from another Earl set up.

Earl scored from a corner with eight minutes left, then Curtis Round fired the fourth.

Guisborough manager Chris Hardy said; “The first half seemed to be rudderless and left room for improvement. Second half we knew that being patient would be key in this fixture, after twice going behind the lads showed good maturity in the knowledge that as the game went on our fitness levels would tell and this is how the game panned out today with comfortable 4:2 victory.”

Dunston UTS had a good 2-0 away win at Holker Old Boys. Stephen Richardson gave them the lead when he cut in from the right and fired into the top corner and Alex Francis got the second following a great run and cross by Andy Bulford.

Dunston UTS manager Billy Irwin said; “We did what we had to, and scored two great goals.”

Heaton Stannington, the last club from the ENL Second Division, lost 2-1 at Whitley Bay.

Both sides missed good chances before Whitley took the lead with a hotly disputed penalty by Chris Reid. Heaton levelled soon after through Richie Hoggins from a Ben Telford assist, but Adam Shanks finished off a good move to put Whitley through to play Matlock in the next round.

Heaton Stannington assistant manager Geoff Walker said; “I thought we deserved a replay. We couldn’t have asked any more regarding effort, and we were very disappointed with the penalty decision against us. We more than matched them, but good luck to Whitley Bay.”

Whitley Bay manager Paddy Atkinson said; “It was another tough game against a team who played long ball. We missed chances and if we had converted them, it would have made the game easier. But a win’s a win.”

Marske United must travel across to Lancaster on Tuesday night after they drew 1-1 at Mount Pleasant against the EvoStik League side.

There were chances at both ends before Marske took the lead with eleven minutes left when Liam O’Sullivan scored from a corner, but Ryan Winder equalised soon after. Craig Gott nearly scored the winner, but his free kick was well saved by the Lancaster keeper.

Marske assistant manager Nathan Haslam said; “It was a scrappy game on a hard bobbly pitch. That said, the game was very even and a draw was a fair result.”

North Shields must travel to Cumbria for a midweek replay after they were held 1-1 at home by Kendal.

The EvoStik League side took the lead on 28 minutes through Dan Forbes, and Shields levelled eight minutes later through James Luccock. Kendal had Rob Williams dismissed three minutes from the end.

North Shields assistant manager Andy Bowman said; “I thought we equipped ourselves well and matched a team in a higher division well. The replay will be tough but we’re confident.”

Ashington lost 2-1 at home to Thackley from the Northern Counties East League.

After a goalless first half, Thackley scored twice in the space of three minutes to put them in control, and Matty Grieve’s goal four minutes from the end wasn’t enough.

Ashington assistant manager Ian Skinner said; “I’m not sure what to say. First half we had a lot of possession without creating too many clear cut chances. Thackley offered very little. Second half we didn’t leave the changing rooms and our effort and application were very poor.”

The draw for the first qualifying round on September 12th is: Jarrow Roofing v Congleton, Washington v Runcorn Linnets, Padiham v Marske or Lancaster, Harrogate RA or Spennymoor v Blyth, Consett v Colne, Matlock Town v Whitley Bay, North Shields or Kendal v Dunston UTS, Salford City v Whitby, Darlington v Hyde United, Ashton United v Guisborough , Brighouse or Atherton Collieries v Newton Aycliffe.
