Shildon manager Gary Forrest is considering his future at the club after his team won the Brooks Mileson Northern League Cup on Tuesday night.

Shildon have just completed one of the best seasons in their history, winning the Durham Challenge Cup and League Cup, and agonisingly missing out on the league by drawing their last game at Bedlington.

“I’m celebrating my tenth year at the club next week, and I’m not sure whether I want to continue past that point,” he said. “I’ve been thinking about the future for a few weeks now. I’ll make my mind up in the next fortnight. The club know that I’m thinking about it.

“We’ve finished second in the league this season, and figured in the draw for the first round of the FA Cup. In the past, we’ve finished second, third, fourth in the league, and reached the semi finals of the Vase. To get within one goal of winning the league in the club’s 125th year was difficult to take.

“Perhaps ten years is long enough, and I need a new challenge. I’m not sure if I’ve done Shildon enough, and if there’s another project at the club to get my teeth into.”

Two goals by Billy Greulich-Smith gave Shildon the League Cup against Newton Aycliffe, and Forrest said; ““Winning the League Cup made up a little bit for not winning the league. We changed things around at half time, and swopped Billy Greulich-Smith and Chris Emms over.

“Everyone was distraught when we didn’t win the league, and we had to pick the lads up before the final. They were determined not to mess things up.”
