Shildon, the favourites for the FA Vase, were knocked out of the competition 3-2 by Shaw Lane Aquaforce at Barnsley’s Oakwell ground tonight.

Shildon took the lead in just the second minute when Ben Wood headed in a long ball forward, and they nearly went 2-0 up with a good shot by Billy Greulich-Smith that the keeper tipped around the post.

Shaw Lane levelled with a header by Steff Holt from a corner, but then Shildon had a goal by Darren Richardson disallowed for offside.

However, Shaw Lane went in front from another corner just on the half time whistle, fired in from the edge of the box by Holt. Worse was to follow for the Railwaymen when Shane Kesley beat Shildon keeper Kyle Hayes with a deflected free kick midway through the second half.

After that, the Northern Counties East League side tried to slow the game down, and hardly allowed Shildon many chances, until the last minute of normal time when Micky Rae scored.

The result means that there are just three Northern League teams left in the Vase. North Shields and Consett who play each other in the next round, and Dunston UTS.

In the ENL, Marske United lost an away league game for the first time this season when they were beaten 3-0 at Penrith tonight.

Penrith took the lead after four minutes through Jamie Hope, then on 64 minutes they added a second through Ben Jackson when he finished off a flowing move. Marske missed several chances to get back into the game, but Martyn Coleman scored a third for Penrith right at the end.

Guisborough drew 1-1 at second placed North Shields, who are now eight points behind West. After a goalless first half in which both sides missed chances, Guisborough took the lead on 52 minutes when a corner was flicked on for Danny Earl to head in at the far post.

But Shields levelled on 66 minutes when Guisborough didn’t clear a corner and the ball fell for Michael McKeown to score from 20 yards.

In the second division, Stokesley won 2-1 at Willington. Dave Edwards scored twice for Stokesley before Liam Whitworth pulled a goal back.
