Stourbridge 0 Shildon 2.

Shildon pulled off another giantkilling when they won their FA Cup replay at Stourbridge tonight to set up a final qualifying round tie next Saturday at Norton United.

Shildon have now beaten four clubs from above them in the national system, two of them in away replays.

Shildon’s coach got lost on the way to the ground, so the team didn’t arrive until 7.15, but that didn’t seem to bother the Railwaymen, as they took the game to the EvoStik League side, and caused some problems without creating a clear chance.

They had a couple of free kicks in good positions, one of which from 40 yards out, taken by Liam Atkin, almost caught out Stourbridge keeper Dean Coleman.

Their early play deserved a goal, and it came along on 31 minutes, when Ben Wood hit a 20 yarder that took a slight deflection and wrong footed Coleman on its way into the net.

Shildon nearly scored a second when Wood put a half chance from a Mark Hudson pass into the keeper’s hands, while at the other end Shildon keeper Kyle Hayes had virtually nothing to do in terms of direct action.

Stourbridge re-organised for the second half, and nearly levelled with efforts by Drew Canavan and Ben Billingham that went just wide, while Hayes pulled off a top class save from Billingham.

Shildon bounced back and nearly scored a second when Paul Connor broke through, but Coleman saved at the striker’s feet.

Hayes pulled off another good save from Billingham, but at the other end Shildon scored a crucial second on 73 minutes, when Wood turned in a John Brackstone cross from the right.

After that, Stourbridge, who have reached the second round proper twice in recent years, piled forward, but couldn’t create any direct chances.

Manager Gary Forrest said; “We have a very strong changing room with some great character, and that shone through. Every single player dug in and had an impact on the game.”
