Shildon missed a chance to go top of the ENL First Division when they were beaten 3-2 at home by Guisborough last night.

Shildon had the better of the chances in the first half and took the lead when Billy Greulich-Smith crossed into the Guisborough area, and Leon Carling, under pressure from Paul Connor, headed into his own goal.

But Guisborough levelled early in the second half when Danny Johnson beat a defender and lashed the ball into the roof of the net for his 42nd league goal of the season, and on 70 minutes Michael Roberts scored direct from a corner.

Paul Connor levelled for Shildon from a through ball, and they seemed to have the advantage when Guisborough’s Luke Bythway was shown his second yellow.

But Guisborough recovered and scored a late winner when Roberts broke clear and fired past keeper Lewis Graham.

West Auckland, playing their third game is many days, beat Newton Aycliffe 3-0 at the Seagrave Stadium. Stuart Banks put them into the lead after 4 minutes from a John Campbell pass, then just after half time Campbell scored from the rebound after Steve Richardson’s shot was blocked. Connor Lowes got the third on 75 minutes with a left foot shot from a Campbell set up.

In the second division, Brandon and Esh winning drew their bottom three clash 1-1. David Harrison scored for Brandon, with Carl Beasley on target for Esh.

Ryton and Crawcrook kept their hopes of avoiding relegation alive by beating Whitehaven 2-1.

Willington beat Thornaby 4-1 at Hall Lane, with Chris Hardy scoring a hat trick, one of them a penalty.

Northallerton beat South Shields 4-0, with two goals apiece from Colin Anderson and Christian Holliday.
