Shildon player-manager Danny Moore was pleased that his team’s pre season preparations were rewarded when they pulled off a good 2-0 FA Cup extra preliminary round win over Morpeth at Dean Street on Saturday.

Moore, who was appointed boss near the end of last season, admitted that he was very nervous before the game, and said; “It was my first pre-season as a manager, and I wasn’t sure whether I had done the right stuff with the lads. But they bought into what Micky Barron and I are trying to do at the club, they took everything on board and put it into practice.”

The Railwaymen took an early lead when Shildon were awarded a penalty for a foul on Jamie Harwood, and Matty Robson tucked the ball past Morpeth keeper Karl Dryden.

Morpeth hit the post through Joe Walton, but Shildon could have gone further ahead if the woodwork hadn’t denied Moore and Micky Rae had put a good chance away from close range.

However, they broke through again midway through the second half when Lewis Dodds blocked a clearance by Dryden and the ball went into the net.

Shildon are now away to Guisborough in the next round.

West Auckland, who have signed Arran Wearmouth from Darlington and Adam Mitchell from Spennymoor, were knocked out of the competition when they lost 2-1 at Penrith.

They went two goals down in the first half hour. Elliott Bousfield put Penrith into the lead with a tap in then Bousfield hit the post and Jonny Murray scored.

West pulled a goal back through Anthony Bell from the penalty spot, and manager Gary Forrest said; “It was a frustrating day, but there were some real positives and some areas that still need some work.”

Bishop Auckland must replay at Heritage Park on Wednesday night after they drew 3-3 at a windy Consett.

Bishops, with the wind behind them in the first half, led 3-1 at half time. They couldn’t have asked for a better start when Matty Moffat won the ball off the Consett keeper and tapped in, but Michael Sweet levelled for Consett after Michael Mackay’s shot was blocked. Ian Ward headed Bishops back in front on 27 minutes, then Moffat fired the third before half time.

But with 20 minutes left Jack Elliott set up Mackay to pull a goal back, and Sweet levelled from close range after the ball was nodded down to him.

Bishop Auckland manager Steve Riley said; “It was a very difficult day in which two good teams gave everything. The team who played with the wind had advantage generally. At 3-1 to us, the next goal was crucial and unfortunately Consett managed to get it and gained momentum.

“We played well with some fantastic individual performances and I wouldn’t fault the team at all. We are still in the hat for the next round, so we have another chance on Wednesday.”

Newton Aycliffe are through thanks to a 1-0 home win over Chester-le-Street, Stuart Banks scoring the goal that mattered after 54 minutes from a Paul Weldon cross. New signing Craig Hutchinson had a goal disallowed in the first half, while Chester keeper Jack Wilson made some good saves.

Newton Aycliffe manager Deano Browne said; “It was a difficult game against an organised and hardworking Chester team. We had enough chances to win the game quite comfortably but their keeper had a very good game. It was a typical first game of the season and we’re really happy to be through to the next round.”

The draw for the preliminary round on 19th August is: Albion Sports v Newton Aycliffe, Barnoldswick v Dunston UTS, Consett or Bishop Auckland v Heaton Stannington, Goole v Newcastle Benfield, Guisborough v Shildon, Penrith v Seaham Red Star or Whitley Bay, Scarborough Athletic v Marske or North Shields, South Shields v Bridlington, Sunderland RCA v Ashington
