West Auckland have announced that former Shildon manager Gary Forrest will be their new manager.

Forrest, who guided Shildon to the league championship last season, left Dean Street on principle following the transfer of David Ferguson to Darlington, and takes over from Steve Skinner, who left a fortnight ago.

Forrest, though, won’t be able to attend his team’s game on Saturday against his old club Shildon following family commitments.

Shildon midfielder Lewis Wing led the Railwaymen to victory over Marske United at Dean Street After the Railwaymen had a goal by Adam Burnicle disallowed after the referee consulted his assistant, Marske had midfielder Andrew Ramsbottom carried off with a knee injury. Lewis Wing hit the post for Shildon before half time, but he had better fortune on 65 minutes when he beat a defender and curled the ball into the top corner of the net past Marske keeper Robbie Dean, for his 27th league goal of the season.

Wing, who is on his way to Middlesbrough at the end of the season, then dribbled through the Marske defence and set up Adam Burnicle for the second, and then from his left wing cross, Marske defender Matthew Bell turned the ball into his own net for the third.

Morpeth are now second after they beat Washington 1-0, thanks to a first half goal by Denver Morris when he lobbed the Washington keeper.

Dunston lost 2-1 at Penrith. Dale Burrell gave Dunston the lead, then Martyn Coleman levelled from the spot.

In the second division, Ryton and Crawcrook climbed off the bottom of the table with a 4-0 home win over Thornaby, which means that Esh Winning will finish bottom, but they may be reprieved from relegation anyway because of South Shields’ promotion and Norton’s demise.
